A federal appeals court ruling in a Massachusetts restitution case should place lenders on notice if they purchase loans from correspondent, as well as closing agents. Ruling in Greenwald v. Chase Manhattan Bank, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st District found the bank not liable to reimburse funds that the escrow agent mistakenly fronted to pay off liens on properties underlying refinanced correspondent loans the bank had purchased.
