Fannie Mae helped finance $190 billion in home mortgages for 2 million families in 2000, giving the company a strong first-year start in meeting its ambitious goal of providing $2 trillion in home loan financing to 18 million families by the end of the decade. Low- and moderate-income households were the largest beneficiaries of Fannie's latest homeownership initiative, the "American Dream Commitment," which received $81.68 billion in targeted mortgage financing last year.
