The commercial banking industry continued to aggressively add mortgage-backed securities to their investment portfolios during the first quarter of 2003, with a special emphasis on agency-backed assets. According to new data released by federal regulators, commercial banks held $759.8 billion of MBSs at the end of the first quarter, up 8.2 percent in just three months. That represented a gain of 24.9 percent over
