Thrift institutions continued to buy aggressively in the mortgage-securities market during the first quarter of this year, sustaining a buying spree that’s been underway for about a year. According to data released by the Office of Thrift Supervision, the industry held $150.4 billion of mortgage securities at the end of the first quarter, up 4.9 percent in just three months.
