In a much anticipated and closely watched congressional hearing, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan this week made headlines by calling for Congress to enact legislation that would curb the growth of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Additionally, the country’s top central banker said lawmakers need to more clearly limit the government’s backing of GSE debt and obligations. He even voiced support for the idea of privatizing Fannie and Freddie in the not-so-distant future.
