Throughout the ongoing debate over GSE reform, Fannie Mae officials have consistently told lawmakers that they support having a “strong” federal regulator overseeing the safety and soundness of their operations. Fannie’s definition of a “strong” agency, however, differs markedly with the terms laid out by the Bush administration via the Treasury Department.
