Last year’s booming mortgage origination climate helped Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac significantly increase their hold on the mortgage market. According to numbers compiled by Inside The GSEs, Fannie’s and Freddie’s share of total originations surged from the previous record of 53 percent set in 2001 to a new record of 59 percent in 2002. As recently as 2000, Fannie and Freddie accounted for less than 45 percent of annual mortgage production.
