Fannie Mae is learning the hard way that financial reporting under GAAP can be very punishing when you hold large amounts of derivatives. The GSE reported its GAAP net income for 2002 tumbled a hefty $1.28 billion as a huge $4.54 billion in “paper” losses on purchased options wiped out substantial gains in net interest income and guaranty fee income during the year.
