Commercial banks continued to boost their investments in GSE debt as 2002 was winding to a close. According to recent numbers from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., banks held some $213.70 billion in GSE debt at the end of the third quarter. This was nearly $24 billion more than they held at the start of 2002 and represented the highest level of GSE debt investments found since year-end 2000.
