Despite ongoing consolidation in the thrift industry, the Federal Home Loan Bank system is continuing to add new members. During the first three quarters of this year, the system added 115 new members to bring its total to 7,992, according to the FHLBanks Office of Finance. Not surprisingly, the number of thrift members has actually declined this year while the number of banks, credit unions and insurance companies has risen.
