After letting their holdings drop in 2001, commercial banks are once again gobbling up GSE debt securities at a brisk pace in 2002. According to numbers compiled by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the nation’s commercial banks added more than $4 billion to their GSE holdings in the second quarter of this year. This brought the industry’s total GSE holdings to $202.01 billion as of June 30.
