The first quarter was generally kind to the industry’s mid-sized players, who saw volume, and for the most part, profits, rise. But origination costs also appear to be on the upswing. Saxon Mortgage reported $19.7 million in net income, up from $12.9 million during the same period in 2003. But earnings were down slightly from the $20.2 million the company reported in the fourth quarter.
