Tax returns and bank statements were the primary sources of fraud encountered by subprime lenders last year, a new report by Mortgage Asset Research Institute. In an annual case report to the National Home Equity Mortgage Association, MARI said that fraud involving tax records and financial statements accounted for 49 percent of cases submitted by subprime lenders to its MIDEX database last year.
