Last year was clearly a good one for the subprime industry’s public companies – many of which posted record profits and huge gains on the production front. But 2004 also ended on something of an ominous note, as lenders – particularly wholesalers – reported an upturn in the costs of making loans and, in some cases, a late-year-slide in volume.
