The first round of earnings reports suggests that 2002 was indeed a profitable year for some of the subprime industry’s largest players. For instance, New Century Financial reported $54.3 million in net income for the fourth quarter, up from $23.3 million during the same period in 2001. Overall, New Century earned $179.7 million last year, a substantial increase from the prior year’s $48 million net income.
