Bank regulators in New York have backtracked on controversial due diligence guidelines aimed at the secondary market. But underwriters haven’t completely dodged the bullet on the potentially costly recommendations. In fact, officials at the Empire State’s Banking Department suggested that the release of those guidelines in an industry letter on the Community Reinvestment Act was a mistake. But it may be too late to put the genie back into the jug.
