FHA production of mortgages with loan amounts exceeding $417,000 rose to $4.8 billion during the first three months of 2012, according to Inside FHA Lendings analysis of FHA data. The FHA posted a significant 21.1 percent increase in agency jumbo production from the fourth quarter of 2011, offsetting the 17.9 percent drop in production year over year. The Department of Housing and Urban Development and Lender Processing Services are trying to find out whose data on FHA foreclosure starts were flawed, leading to a dispute over a controversial LPS report. The April Mortgage Monitor report released by LPS shows that, while overall foreclosure starts fell 2.6 percent in April, FHA foreclosure starts jumped 73 percent to 60,000 during the month. Based on the number of ARM and hybrid ARM loans the VA has guaranteed in recent years, CBO estimates that the VA would guarantee approximately $1.3 billion worth of additional loans annually over the next 10 years. The volume of new mortgages with FHA insurance jumped 25.1 percent in April from a year ago, continuing the heightened production pace in government lending seen during the first three months of 2012. Excluding Home Equity Conversion Mortgage originations, FHA lending in April improved not only on a year-over-year basis but also on a monthly basis.
