Bill Excluding Lay Providers from Closing Table Opposed

The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are urging Rhode Island lawmakers to reject state consumer protection legislation that would bar non-lawyers from competing in real estate closings. In a March 29 letter to the state’s House of Representatives leadership, the two agencies warned that there is no evidence showing that allowing lawyers and non-lawyers to compete for closing business is doing consumers harm.
