Mortgage Securitization Rate Hit Record-High 68% in 2003 as 4th Quarter Surge Boosts Level

Fueled by low interest rates and an explosion in refinance activity in the primary mortgage market, the securitization of home loans climbed to a record-breaking level in 2003. For the first time ever, more than two thirds of the mortgages made in a single year were funneled into securities.
