Freddie Mac reported a sharp drop in MBS production in January, with new issuance slipping from $73.2 billion in the last month of 2002 to just $48.2 billion. That 34.2 percent drop in new MBS issuance left Freddie Mac with a low 31 percent share of the total GSE market. Its rival, Fannie Mae, posted a solid 9.0 percent gain
