Even though interest rates largely stabilized in the first quarter, mortgage originations for the period continued to suffer the fallout from the dramatic increase in rates that happened last summer. Refinance lending fell sharply in 1Q2014 and purchase-money loans couldn’t make up the difference, failing to meet the levels they reached late last year. As the market adapts to both the declining volume and the shift in loan purpose, correspondent lending has gained importance and nonbanks have continued to build their share of the mortgage lending pie. The jumbo and home equity sectors are riding out the downturn better than others.
