Lenders must account for their “derivative loan commitments” – commitments to originate mortgage loans that will be held for resale – as derivatives on their balance sheets, according to an advisory issued jointly by several federal agencies last week. Financial institutions also must apply generally accepted accounting principles when accounting for these transactions, the advisory said.
