The thrift industry pumped out a record $229.9 billion of new mortgage originations during the third quarter of 2003, blowing past the previous record of $195.8 billion set just three months earlier. The Office of Thrift Supervision reports that new originations rose 17.4 percent during the third quarter, bringing year-to-date production to $585.9 billion – more than the industry has ever produced
