The National Association of Mortgage Brokers and the Mortgage Bankers Association of America tried to fend off criticism from Sarbanes and other panelists by focusing on the consumer benefits of yield-spread premiums. There was general agreement at the hearing that when used properly, yield-spread premiums can be a legitimate tool in helping a homebuyer or owner offset closing costs. If fully disclosed and explained clearly, a consumer may choose to pay the yield-spread
