Consumer advocates last week said they are willing to back legislation creating national anti-predatory lending standards as long as they do not interfere with states’ ability to protect consumers. The debate over preemption reached a fevered pitch during a mortgage broker conference where representatives of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, the National Association of Consumer Advocates and the AARP again locked horns with industry representatives who favored federal overrides of state laws.
