Indiana. The state House early this month passed legislation banning some controversial mortgage practices and restricting others. Lawmakers voted 96-0 in approving H.B. 1229. The bill prohibits debt cancellation agreements, financed single-premium credit life insurance, balance statement charges, debt acceleration, balloon payments, high prepayment penalties, homeownership counseling referrals, and making loans without considering the borrower’s ability to repay.
