Freddie Mac has followed Fannie Mae’s lead in tightening its purchase requirements governing cash-out refinance mortgages. Borrowers looking to cash in on the equity built up in their homes have made so-called cash-out refis one of the hottest products in the mortgage market over the past few years. But some of these loans have started showing higher-than-expected default rates and both GSEs have started to take notice.
