This year’s strong refi environment is helping Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac post some impressive gains in their share of the new mortgage origination market. According to numbers compiled by Inside The GSEs, the two GSEs’ share of new 1-4 family mortgage originations hit 62 percent during the first half of 2002. This was up considerably from the 51 percent share Fannie and Freddie held during the same six-month period of 2001.
