Mortgage Bankers Face Major Profit Squeeze in 2004 As Servicing Volatility Collides with Slowing Production

The mortgage banking industry has been bracing for a shift in the wind for over a year and half and a new, markedly cooler weather front appeared to move in during the third quarter. According to data compiled by Inside Mortgage Profitability, an affiliated newsletter, mortgage banking profits fell 37.7 percent during the third quarter of 2004. A total of 15 mortgage lenders, representing a wide sampling of companies active in the business, reported $1.55
