As the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight and other federal regulators continue to gather evidence of alleged accounting abuse at Fannie Mae, the testimony of a former Fannie accountant is likely to figure prominently to the ongoing investigations. In written testimony presented at a recent congressional hearing, Roger Barnes, the former manager of financial accounting and deferred assets within Fannie’s Controller Division, said he began alerting the company to improper accounting practices in 1999.
