Shelby Dangles Preemption for Tougher Privacy Rules in FCRA

Senate lawmakers have upped the ante for permanent federal preemption as the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee prepared to tackle credit-reporting legislation. The status of a federal preemption measure proposed by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby is uncertain, as the Alabama Republican last week made clear that he would add preemption to the bill only in exchange for more consumer protections.
