2000 HMDA Data Bear Out What Agencies Already Know

Mortgage loan denial rates for minorities rose for some race groups and declined for others, but the high increase in loans with unreported race data may be distorting the real picture, according to Inside Mortgage Compliance’s analysis of the 2000 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data. The denial rate for black borrowers dropped to 34.1 percent in 2000 from 37.1 percent in 1999, while the rate for Hispanics slid to 23.3 percent from 24.9 percent.
