Tougher Exams to Follow as Agencies Reject Industry Plea

Tighter regulatory scrutiny of subprime lending portfolios became imminent after regulators rejected an industry appeal to withdraw tough interagency subprime lending guidance for federal examiners. Regulators made clear that the guidance will affect only those lenders that "systematically" target certain types of borrowers. The guidance will not affect the vast majority of traditional lenders or institutions that make subprime loans as part of their normal lending activities in their market area, even if such loans
