Regulators Issue Rules for Safeguarding Confidentiality

Federal thrift and banking regulators have issued joint guidelines for protecting confidential consumer information against criminal access or any other threat from outside or within the institution. Issued on Jan. 17, the guidelines implement a provision in the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act requiring a network of safeguards for customer records and information. They become effective on July 1, 2001.
