Most market observers believe that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would not voluntarily give up their ties to the federal government and become full-fledged private companies until they had exhausted all of their opportunities in the mortgage finance market. Recent political events, however, have convinced one analyst to believe that this change could be less than two years away.
