Top Mortgage Players 1Q13

Mortgage originations slumped in the first quarter of 2013, but some sectors proved healthier than others. Wholesale took most of the hit from the downturn, with retail slipping just slightly. Purchase-money mortgages gained on refinance loans, even though refis continue to make up the lion’s share of new mortgage business. Jumbo lending, particularly non-agency, is holding up better than conventional-conforming and government-insured, with lenders finding new demand for jumbos in the secondary market. And private mortgage insurers can see profitability on the horizon for the first time in years.

Dig deeper into the changes of the first quarter—and get all the details about the top players in each of these sectors—in Top Mortgage Players.

After the November elections, how long will it take for a new Congress and White House to pass GSE reform legislation?

I’m confident a bill will be passed the first year.

2 to 3 years. GSE reform is complicated.

Sadly it won’t happen in a Clinton or Trump first term.

Not in my lifetime.
